Driving to Snowshoe can be a little tricky due to its remote location. People are always asking in our Snowshoe Mountain Facebook group, “what is the best route from XYZ?” Below, we have compiled a list of answers coming in from various cities.
Louisville, KY
I-64 east to I-79 north in Charleston and then to exit 99 to Elkins and then south on 219. It is 4 lane most of the way and only a short distance on a good 2 lane 219 south. Especially for those not used to driving on curvy winding West Virginia roads the best and easiest route by far.
Charlotte, NC
I live in Clt and I always take 77, 64 (take the Greenbrier Exit; stop at Road Hogs for barbecue our family favorite!) 92,(towards Cass), 92/28 (at Dunmore head towards Cass), and 66 to Snowshoe Drive. I always put the Greenbrier into our Google Maps to get out of Clt/NC with traffic. Sometimes there have been slowdowns and accidents in VA. It will send you backroads before Wytheville. Once we make it to the Greenbrier last area for cell service I put in Cass, WV. We go up that side of the mountain and have for the last 15 years.
Knoxville, TN
We take 40 to 81 to 77 to 64. Then, depending upon road conditions, you can take 219 up to 66 (access road), or, to avoid mountains and a lot of twists and turns, take 92 to 39 – there you can cut over to 219 through Marlinton (if you need to pick up groceries – IGA), or stay on 92 to Cass and then come up to the mountain on 66.
Charleston, WV
Take I79 North to Rte 33 East in Weston (exit #99). Stay on Rte 33 east to the Elkins exit for Rte 219 South ( I forget the exit #). Rte 219 south will turn into a 2 lane road a few miles past the Elkins Walmart. That Walmart is about 1 hour from Snowshoe. Take a left on to Rte 66 right before the Ski Barn. Take the first left onto Snowshoe Dr to the top of the mountain.
Norfolk / Virginia Beach, VA
We take I 64w to 81s. The first exit take rt 262 to Churchville rt 250 exit. 250w to Monterrey, 220 s then 84w to Frost WV. Then 92 to 66. The route through white Sulphur springs is straighter but adds an hour.
Pittsburgh, PA
Make your way to I 79 and stay on it all the way to Weston, WV. Exit onto route 33 east to Elkins. Stay on 33 east until you get to the red light for rte 92 Harrison Blvd. Hang a right there and take it past the Elkins hospital over to rte 219 south. Merge onto 219 south take it to rte 66. Left on to 66 east then left to Snowshoe Drive. Take Snowshoe Drive all the way up.
