J. Hall and Sons Oriental Scenery Transferware

  • by

Kelly and I have been in possession of two very fine pieces of antique blue and white ceramic transferware. We recently decided to dig deeper into the history of what these two items are all about.  Both items are marked I. Hall and Sons Oriental Scenery.

After some extensive online research, we determined that both pieces were made in Staffordshire England between 1822 and 1832.  They are part of the oriental scenery collection made by John Hall and Sons.  It’s odd that the markings look like I. Hall but all the websites we visited state John Hall.

We were directed to a website called worthpoint.com.  Worthpoint is a subscription-based website that helps collectors research past sales of specific items. In our case, both items in our possession were sold on eBay.  One was sold in 2013 and the other in 2021.

The first item is a soup tureen with a matching lid.  The beautiful piece is marked I. Hall and Sons Oriental Scenery Palace of the  King of the Delhi.  The tureen is in remarkable condition for its age. As you can see from the screenshot below, it sold on eBay on February 21, 2021, for $675.  Further down in this post will be photos of the tureen that we actually possess.

The second piece is a serving platter marked I. Hall and Sons Oriental Scenery Hindoo Temple.  The platter is in very good condition but does have a small chip on the underside as well as a small crack visible underneath but does not show through on the top.  Our research on worthpoint.com indicates that this item sold on eBay for $699 on April 14, 2013.  Below is a screenshot of that value.

As of this writing, we are debating what to do with these two pieces.  We are considering selling them on eBay or to a local antique shop.
